Leh Ladakh Manali Road Trip (LHMN)

Day 1: Arrival in Manali & Local Orientation

Upon your arrival in Manali, you will check into your hotel and spend the day relaxing. This first day is crucial for your body to begin adjusting to the higher altitude of the Himalayas. In the evening, you will have a meet-and-greet session with your tour manager and fellow travelers, followed by a welcome dinner. Since this is an arrival day, there is no significant travel distance beyond the transfer to your hotel.

Day 2: Manali to Jispa via Atal Tunnel

Your road adventure begins with a drive covering approximately 95 km (4–5 hours) as you head through the Atal Tunnel, an engineering marvel that bypasses the Rohtang Pass to connect Manali to the Lahaul Valley. Along the way, you will visit the scenic Sissu Lake and witness the Sissu Waterfall. The landscape transitions from the lush greenery of Manali to the rugged, high-altitude terrain of Lahaul as you reach the serene village of Jispa, located on the banks of the Bhaga River.

Day 3: Jispa to Sarchu via Baralacha La

Today involves a shorter but more challenging drive of roughly 85 km (5–6 hours) as you climb toward Baralacha La Pass (16,040 ft). You will stop at the turquoise Suraj Tal Lake, often called the "Lake of the Sun God," which remains frozen for a large part of the year. The day ends at Sarchu, a high-altitude plateau on the border of Himachal and Ladakh, where you will stay in specialized luxury camps to further your acclimatization.

Day 4: Sarchu to Leh via Tanglang La

This is the longest and most iconic leg of the trip, covering a distance of approximately 250 km (9–10 hours). You will tackle the Gata Loops—a series of 21 hairpin bends—and traverse the flat, 40 km expanse of the More Plains. After ascending Tanglang La (17,480 ft), one of the highest motorable passes in the world, you will descend into the Indus Valley to reach the vibrant town of Leh.

Day 5: Leh Local Sightseeing & Markets

After the long journey, today is dedicated to exploring Leh’s cultural landmarks within a short radius of about 20 km (2–3 hours). You will visit the Shanti Stupa, a white-domed Buddhist monument offering panoramic views, and explore the Leh Palace, modeled after the Potala Palace in Lhasa. The evening is free for you to wander through the Leh Main Market to shop for Tibetan artifacts and local handicrafts.
Day 6: Leh – Sham Valley Excursion

Excursion takes you on a 70 km round trip (4–5 hours) along the Leh-Srinagar highway to Sham Valley. Highlights include the Hall of Fame war museum, the sacred Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, and the gravity-defying Magnetic Hill. The journey reaches its peak at Sangam, the breathtaking confluence of the Zanskar and Indus rivers, before you return to Leh for the night.

Day 7: Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La

Leaving the Indus Valley, you will drive approximately 160 km (6–7 hours) to reach the "Valley of Flowers"—Nubra Valley. The route takes you over Khardung La Pass (17,582 ft), historically cited as the world’s highest motorable road. You will visit the Diskit Monastery, home to a massive 100 ft Maitreya Buddha statue, and the Hunder Sand Dunes, where you can ride double-humped Bactrian camels.

Day 8: Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso via Shyok

Today you will head toward the famous Pangong Tso, covering roughly 275 km (7–8 hours) via the Shyok River route. This adventurous drive passes through remote Ladakhi villages and rugged terrain to reach the high-altitude salt-water lake shared between India and China. You will spend the night in a camp or cottage near the lakeside to witness the spectacular color-changing waters under one of the world's clearest skies.

Day 9: Pangong Tso to Leh via Chang La

After catching the sunrise at the lake, you begin a 225 km (7–8 hours) journey back to Leh. This route takes you over Chang La Pass (17,590 ft), the third-highest motorable road in the world. En route, you will stop at the majestic Thiksey Monastery, which resembles the Potala Palace, and the historical Shey Palace before arriving in Leh for a final celebratory dinner.

Day 10: Departure from Leh

Your Himalayan adventure concludes with a short 5 km (20-minute) transfer to the Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport. It is recommended to reach the airport early for security checks, and if possible, book a window seat to enjoy the spectacular aerial views of the Himalayan ranges as you fly home.
